From Classroom to Ocean: First-Graders Learn About Marine Plastic Pollution

Forty first-grade students participated in the Jockey Club Marine Plastic Challenge

Education Programme, taking an engaging and educational environmental tour at Ocean Park.

Through games, the students learned about the growing problem of marine plastic pollution in Hong Kong. They understood that plastic is not simply garbage, but enters the food chain as microplastics, becoming a danger to marine life. The students were surprised by the wide range of sources of microplastics and began to think about how to reduce the use of single-use plastics in their daily lives.

A particularly memorable experience for the students was visiting the zero-carbon solar-powered Harbour Cleaner. Seeing it up close, powered by renewable energy and dedicated to collecting marine debris, the children were fascinated and excited by the integration of technology and sustainable development, which strengthened their environmental awareness.

This activity deepened the students' awareness of environmental issues and inspired them to think about how to reduce their use of plastic in their daily lives. We hope that the students will bring this love for the ocean back to school, working to reduce plastic waste, and helping everyone protect the planet.
