Moral, Civic and National Education
Moral and Civic Education
Moral and civic education have always been an important part of the holistic development of students. The school's Moral and Civic Education Team has been dedicated to cultivating students' positive values and attitudes towards the country, family, life, and learning.
Through promoting moral and civic education, we aim to cultivate ten primary values and attitudes in students, including perseverance, respect, sense of responsibility, national identity, sense of commitment, integrity, care, law-abiding, empathy, and diligence.
The school sets different themes for moral and civic education activities each year, such as "Flourish with a Growth Mindset", "Civic Rights and Responsibilities", "Interpersonal Relationships", and “Respect and Empathy”, and uses various activities to help students establish positive values.
This year, the school is mainly promoting and practicing the themes of moral and civic education in four major forms
1. Life Education Lessons
During other learning experiences and Mentor periods, the school will conduct a series of moral and civic education activities to cultivate students' empathy, care, respect for others, emotional management, and the establishment of good moral character. The school has previously conducted lessons on "Emotions and Positive Psychology" and "Empathy and Compassion". Moreover, the school has optimized the character education curriculum this year, establishing "Life Education Lessons" in junior secondary levels, covering topics such as "Improving Healthy Peer Relationships", "Peer Relationships", and "Anti-bullying Discussions". Through classroom activities, students are able to understand and recognize their own emotions, master emotional management, cultivate empathy and put themselves in others' shoes, and understand the nature and consequences of bullying, learning to protect themselves and others. Students are also guided to use the A-Diary to record the knowledge learned, analyze the issues, and understand the importance of online safety, putting what they have learned into practice. The students' response has been enthusiastic and they have actively engaged in the lessons.
2. Deep Thought Time
To align with the promotion of values education, the school has set aside time during the Wednesday whole-school assembly and Friday Deep Thought Time sessions for teachers to share their moral education experiences. This allows the entire faculty and student body to listen to the principal and teachers share their life experiences, growth mindset, character development, and the "My Pledge to Act" project themes. The sharing covers values such as empathy, perseverance, gratitude, positivity, optimism, cherishing, and respect. These "seeds of positivity" are planted to help students grow and develop an optimistic and proactive attitude to face the various challenges in life.
3. “Empathy and Respect” Poster Design Competition
To cultivate students' positive attitudes and values in life, the Student Development Division and the Moral and Civic Education Team organized an "Empathy and Respect" poster design competition this year. The competition has showcased students' rich imagination and creativity. Students have demonstrated an attitude of empathy, respect, positivity, and optimism through their artistic creations. The outstanding works are exhibited to promote positive interpersonal relationships and moral education among the students.
4. Chinese Culture Day Cleaning Competition
On February 7, 2024, the Moral and Civic Education Team organized a school-wide cleaning competition as part of the Chinese Culture Day celebrations. Students armed with cleaning tools worked together to thoroughly clean every corner of their classrooms, preparing the campus for the upcoming Lunar New Year. The judging teachers carefully inspected each classroom and assessed the students' collaborative efforts. In the end, the students' united labor efforts were rewarded with the Best Collaboration Award and the Tidiest Classroom Award. This activity deepened the students' understanding of Chinese traditional culture and cultivated their team spirit. The students' practical actions also helped create a positive, healthy, and environmentally-friendly school environment.
5. Guest Lectures and Alumni Sharing
The school invited various guests from the community to deliver talks and share their experiences on different themes. For example, the "Reborn Warrior" Ms. Ng Hoi-ki shared her miraculous life story, inspiring students to adopt an optimistic and resilient spirit in facing life's challenges. Members of the Blue Wave Volleyball Club shared the challenges and difficulties they encountered in their athletic careers, imparting the spirit of perseverance to the students. In addition, the school invites graduates who have developed in different professional fields to return and share their career journeys, encouraging students to adopt a growth mindset in their life pursuits. The activities received strong support and appreciation from both teachers and students.
6. "My Pledge to Act" and School-based “MPA Ambassador Scheme”
For the past two consecutive years, the school has participated in the "My Pledge to Act" campaign organized by the Education Bureau. The Moral and Civic Education Team led the initiative, with the theme of "Appreciation and Cherishing, Positivity and Optimism; Diligence and Lawfulness, Benevolence in Action." Through the “MPA Ambassador Scheme," the school conducted collective pledges and whole-school participatory learning activities to cultivate positive values and life attitudes in students. Student leaders, guided by their life mentors, set goals, put their pledges into practice, and assisted the mentors in creating a positive and grateful atmosphere on campus. The initiative was highly praised and recognized by students, parents, teachers, and the Education Bureau.
7. "Happy School" Award Scheme and "Hi-Five Student Engagement " Award Scheme
The school adopted the annual theme of "Flourish with a Growth Mindset," engaging the entire school community, including students, teachers, parents, and alumni, to collaboratively foster a caring, harmonious, and grateful campus culture, as well as a sustainable positive learning environment. The aim was to help students develop an optimistic and resilient life attitude, embracing challenges with a growth mindset. In 2024, the school was awarded the "Happy School Excellence Award" and the "Diverse and Vibrant Campus Award" in the "Happy School" Award Scheme. Additionally, the school received the Honor Award in the 2023 "Hi-Five Student Engagement" Award Scheme.

3. May Fourth Youth Day Activities
On May 4, 1919, thousands of young students in Beijing opposed the signing of the Treaty of Versailles by the Beiyang government, which eventually developed into a patriotic movement against imperialism and feudalism. The May Fourth Movement erupted at a time of national crisis and inspired the Chinese people and the Chinese nation with the aspiration and confidence to achieve national rejuvenation. In December 1949, the Central People's Government Council officially declared May 4th as Youth Day, known as the "May Fourth Youth Day." This year, the Chinese History subject department and the Moral and Civic Education Team jointly organized a May Fourth Youth Day exhibition and an inter-class quiz competition on May 3rd. The exhibition introduced the course and significance of the May Fourth Movement, and the inter-class quiz competition, where students actively answered online questions and filled out response cards, deepened their understanding of the May Fourth Movement. The winning classes were 7E, 8A, and 9E.
4. Exchange with Mainland Sister Schools
During the pandemic, we continued to use online exchange methods and conducted a cultural exchange with our sister school, Tianjin Yaohua High School. In June 2023, our school visited Yantai Gangcheng High School and Tianjin Yaohua High School, which was the first on-site exchange activity after the pandemic. The participating students from Grades 7 to 9 cherished this opportunity and formed deep friendships with the local students. The students also visited scenic spots in Yantai and Tianjin and experienced the local culture and cuisine. The school has maintained close cooperation with the mainland sister schools, quickly restoring the exchange activities before the pandemic. This year, 15 students went to Nanjing and Wuxi to exchange with Nanjing Foreign Language School and Wuxi No.1 Middle School. The students experienced the characteristic embroidery cultural courses at Wuxi No.1 Middle School and visited local landmarks to understand the local history and culture. In June 2024, students from Grades 7 to 11 visited Tianjin Yaohua High School again for another exchange. During the exchange, we also connected with the students staying in Hong Kong to experience the characteristic Chinese painting courses. Through these exchange activities, the students gained rich learning experiences. Our school also looked forward to engaging in more diverse forms of exchange and activities with more mainland sister schools in the future.
