Odyssey of the Mind Competition (Hong Kong Region) 2022

News date

One of the aims of our Gifted Education Team this year is to provide more opportunities for students to enhance their potential and talent in a fun and creative way.

Seven of our Grade 9 gifted students including CHEUNG Ho Lam, HUANG Yueming Helen, HUI Jocelyn, TANG Hau In, CHUI Isabel Dede, KWOK Chi Ching and CHU Yin Wai, had formed a team to take part in the 2022 Odyssey of the Mind Competition (Hong Kong Region) and was awarded the 1st runner-up in this year's competition of Problem 4 (Division II). They also earned the qualification to represent Hong Kong to enter the World Finals in May.

The team was required to solve a problem by designing and building a Matryoshka Structure made of only balsa wood and glue. The structures were removed one-by-one to reveal a tiny character nested inside the smallest structure. The performance had a theme about storage including the structures, placing weights, and the tiny character. That was not it, the team also made good use of different recycled materials to design props and costumes to present their solutions in drama, which also included acting and scriptwriting.

The Odyssey of the Mind is an international extra-curricular problem-solving competition for students of all ages. Through rigorous competitions, from regional to world level, with thousands of students in nearly every state in the US and approximately 25 other countries, it is a golden chance for students to develop important skills such as teamwork, leadership, and STEAM-related competencies in a very hands-on way.

As we are still under travel restrictions due to the pandemic, the team will only be able to take part in the World Finals virtually this year. We look forward to hearing more good news from our gifted students and hopefully we can join the World Finals in the United States next year!
