2023 UMKC Summer Programme – STEM in the Future

News date

This summer, our students had the opportunity to participate in an immersive STEM education and industry excursion at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). In partnership with its School of Science and Engineering, our school aimed to provide students with first-hand experiences in cutting-edge research and technology across the STEM disciplines.

Throughout the summer programme, namely "STEM in the Future", students were introduced to STEM fields through hands-on lab tours, research projects, and talks by academics. They explored computer science concepts like Meta's VR and AI in healthcare through interdisciplinary group projects; toured electrical engineering labs focused on nanotechnology and physics labs with projects like Baja vehicles. Civil engineering and concrete research were showcased through a visit to a local firm; biology sessions covered innovative areas like skin printing and DNA modification. Furthermore, students also learned about the business side of STEM, with visits to startups and workshops on entrepreneurship. Lastly, the programme concluded with student groups synthesising their experiences into final presentations.

This intensive programme definitely opened students' eyes to new academic interests and future careers in STEM. We were excited to foster global connections and bring back knowledge that inspired our school community!
