Gifted Education

Gifted Education

A three-tier operation mode is adopted in implementing gifted education in A-School.

Level one is school-based whole-class teaching. A-School immerses the core elements advocated in gifted education i.e. high-order thinking skills, creativity and personal-social competence in the curriculum for all students; in addition to differentiate teaching through appropriate grouping of students to meet the different needs of the groups with enrichment and extension of curriculum across all subjects in regular classrooms.

Level two is the school-based pull-out programmes. Students with specific talents or outstanding academic results will attend pull-out programmes of generic nature within or after regular school hours to allow systematic training for a homogeneous group of students (e.g. creativity training, leadership training, etc.).  A-School conducts pull-out programmes in specific areas (e.g. Maths, Arts, etc.) within or after regular school hours to allow systematic training for students with outstanding performance in specific domains.

Level three are off-school support.  A-School will nominate our exceptionally gifted students to join the programmes arranged by the Gifted Education Section of Education Bureau and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education, both co-operate with tertiary institutes and other educational organisations/bodies to provide challenging off-site enrichment and extension learning opportunities for exceptionally gifted students nominated by schools.

Students with outstanding results from their subjects, competitions or with full portfolio will be nominated. They are provided with opportunities to participate in gifted programmes offered by various educational institutions, and the inter-school and overseas competitions. The enrichment programmes such as Math Olympiad, Drama, Debate and Robotics are offered for students. Through these programmes, students can explore and develop their strengths and interests.

Acceleration Policy

In our through-train system, students can benefit from the acceleration of individual subject or even a whole grade. Various support measures are also developed for their unique affective development.

According to Reference Manual for Implementing Gifted Education in School: Acceleration Programmes, the definition of acceleration is to acknowledge the diversity of learners’ abilities and the fact that this difference merits educational flexibility. This is an act of intervention to move high-ability students through an educational programme at a faster pace or at a younger-than-usual age. It provides study objectives which match the level, complexity, and pace of the curriculum to the readiness, needs, competencies and motivation of the high-ability students.

Elected students can choose grade-skipping, subject-skipping and curriculum compacting. Grade-skipping means one or more level(s) placement ahead of one’s age-peers. Subject-skipping allows a student who excels in a particular academic subject to work with other students in that area of expertise at a rate that best suits his/her ability or current level of performance. Curriculum compacting enables high-ability students to learn at a faster pace and with less repetition of material they already know.
