A-Singers' Triumph at the 13th World Choir Games in Auckland

News date

At the 13th World Choir Games held in Auckland, New Zealand, in July 2024, our A-Singers made their debut outside Asia and returned triumphantly with a gold diploma, bringing honor to Hong Kong alongside other esteemed teams.

In a fierce competition that saw participation from over ten thousand choral elites representing more than forty countries and regions, the A-Singers showcased their exceptional vocal prowess. They clinched the gold diploma (Level 3) in the secondary school choir open category, emerging as the top Asian choir in their division and securing the third position overall, with a mere 0.55-point difference from the winning team, underscoring their remarkable talent.

Throughout the competition, the A-Singers presented a diverse repertoire of four pieces in three different languages. This included the lyrical choral work "Flight Song" by contemporary Norwegian composer Kim Andre Arnesen, a Cantonese choral composition titled "如畫般的天際" (Picturesque Cityscape) by our Collaborative Pianist Mr. Jason Liu with lyrics by renowned lyricist and parent Ms. Jessie You, marking its overseas debut. They also delivered compelling performances of "Soon Ah Will Be Done" by African American composer William Dawson and the ethereal "Sanctus" by contemporary American composer Carlos Simon. Each piece highlighted the A-Singers' exceptional musical expressiveness and repertoire selection.

Beyond the competitive arena, the A-Singers engaged in two friendship concerts, fostering cultural exchanges with choirs from New Zealand, Denmark, Australia and Indonesia. Reflecting on the experience, team captain Janice Lai, now pursuing studies abroad, remarked, "This journey not only broadened our horizons but also enhanced our friendships; for me, it was a perfect farewell."
