Culture Cup Inter-School Debating Competition - Advancing to Semi-finals

News date

Our school's Chinese Debating Team emerged victorious over CCC Yenching College in the preliminary round of the "Cultural Cup" Hong Kong Debate Competition (「文化盃」全港辯論比賽) in early March, achieving a resounding unanimous score of 3 to 0. CHEUK Ka Him Torres from 9D was awarded the Best Speaker of this round.

The motion was "Going plastic-free does not help solve Hong Kong's trash problem", and we argued on the opposition side. Apart from demonstrating superior debating and presentation skills, our debaters provided a sophisticated analysis that highlighted their critical thinking and reasoning abilities. We contended that the main aim of the "plastic-free" policy is not solely centred on reducing solid waste volume, but rather on mitigating adverse environmental repercussions such as the threat posed to human health (due to microplastics) and marine ecosystems, along with addressing the issue of "bottom ash", the solid residue resulting from incineration.

We have successfully secured a spot in the semi-finals and are poised to compete against STFA Yung Yau College in mid-March. Keep striving for excellence!
